REFRACTIVE ROAD MARKINGS for ROAD SAFETY
Among the products commercialized by Tecnosmalto Group, there are these innovative patented refractive elements for Road Safety:

They are vibrated concrete blocks for road floors having on their surfaces a stratum of reflecting/refractive and anti-skid material, 4.5 mm thick, constituted by glass microspheres at variable granulometry mixed with an appropriately coloured binder.
The Refractive Tile is a block with nominal size 200x125x100 mm and weight 5 kg; some examples of employment of tiles are:
- Pedestrian crossings, both skimming over the ground and forming speed bumps
- Stop lines
- Horizontal signs in motorways
- Guardrail boundaries
- External perimeter and/or walls of tunnels
The Refractive Curb for Roundabouts and Median Strips is a 400x300x280 mm module 43.8 kg weighing. Curbs follow the curving of the roundabout, delimiting it and pointing it out for motorists; they find furthermore employ in delimiting median strips.
The Refractive Border is an element having nominal dimensions 120/150x245x500 mm and weight 35 kg; such blocks can be employed, for example, to border:
- Traffic islands
- Bus stops
- Parking area entrances
Laboratory tests in a specialized Institute have attested that these blocks provide performances in conformity with the UNI EN 1436 Standard - edit. April 2004 (Road marking materials - Road marking performance for road users), Italian version of the corresponding EN 1436 European Standard. Such Standard specifies performances, for road users, of white and yellow road marking materials, expressed by the values of their reflection in daylight conditions and in artificial lighting conditions, of retro reflection of light from vehicles, of colours and of response to skid.
Please note that traditional horizontal road markings based on paints applied on the existing road surface, undergo a decline in initial characteristics both for subliming volatile components and for utilization due to passing vehicles:
after few months, such signs can result not responding to the aforesaid I.S. EN 1436 and a periodic remaking is therefore needed.
Differently, the service life of the product in object was estimated to be near 10 years. Utilization has moreover an improving effect on the product characteristics, because the surface consumption almost exclusively regards the binder; as a consequence, the glass microspheres (which are the elements active in the sign visibility) result progressively exposed.
For these reasons, the refractive road marking elements for road safety propose themselves as a valid alternative to traditional paint-based horizontal road markings.
